OVERVIEW

The world's first home projector compatible with Hybrid Log Gamma HDR
Currently, the HDR standard that most TVs and projectors adhere to is HDR10. This is the standard used by UHD Blu-ray, Netflix and Amazon so is crucial for current 4K content. The VPL-VW550ES is not only compatible with HDR10 but also Hybrid Log Gamma HDR, otherwise known as HyLG. HyLG is a broadcast and user generated standard format that is becoming more prevalent. With the ability to decode both HDR10 and HyLG the VW550ES is the most comprehensively equipped 4K projector to date.

HDR Contrast
Not content with standard HDR picture quality, the VPL-VW550ES features HDR Contrast. This increases the brightness level while retaining the other HDR benefits. HDR not only offers deeper blacks, brighter whites and more vibrant colours, but also more subtle images, too. So what looks like an area of solid black on an inferior projector will be shown to actually have shade and texture, previously unseen.

UHD 4K resolution for the ultimate detail
Thanks to their massive experience in all aspects of entertainment, Sony are now able to bring the detail of 4K Ultra HD resolution to the home cinema. Simply put, projecting in this resolution gives detail and realism that's impossible to achieve with conventional Full HD resolution. UHD 4K resolution is four times greater than the more conventional 1920 x 1080 Full HD projectors and it's a difference you can easily see on a large projection screen.

Super Resolution 4k Upscaling
Watching a 4K signal from a source such as UHD Blu-ray, Netflix or Amazon Prime is awesome but the VPL-VW550 still excels with other resolutions, too. With Super Resolution 4K upscaling built-in, you get much of the benefit of 4K resolution with your existing Blu-ray disc library. Just leave it to the Sony to upscale the image and maximise the picture quality.

HDCP2.2 now on both HDMI sockets
Another improvement over the 520 is that the 550 now features HDCP 2.2 compatibility on both its HDMI sockets rather than just the one. Compatible to highest current level - up to 4K 60p YCbCr 4:2:0 / 8-bit and HDCP 2.2 - this means that you'll be able to use the projector with two of the latest UHD 4K video sources, including UHD Blu-ray.

SXRD panels for vivid picture quality
Sony uses advanced SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) panels with an incredibly rapid response rate of just 2.5 milliseconds. This gives the VPLVW550ES smooth, fluid motion that's faster and more stable than typical LCD TVs. Another advantage over TVs is the increased panel resolution of 4096 x 2160. This ensures that films can be viewed in panoramic formats, such as CinemaScope and American Vista with much less of the picture taken up by black bars.

Improved contrast
Already highly impressive, the VPL-VW550ES has improved its predecessor's contrast ratio to 350,000:1. SXRD panels use a superior alignment layer to LCD, meaning less light is scattered giving greater levels of black and a better contrast ratio. With an Advanced Iris, the VPL-VW550ES also offers a highly competitive brightness of 1800lm, meaning the room doesn't have to be pitch black for stunning image realism.

RF 3D compatible
With a built-in RF transmitter, the VPL-VW550ES is all set for 3D. Simply add optional RF glasses and you have access to high quality 3D; without the need for a separate transmitter. Especially impressive on the big screen, 3D images offer awesome depth and projection when shown on a quality device such as this.
